The aphrodisiac quality of the Orris root gave it the name "Love Drawing Powder", and it was once believed that the root could be used to find and hold love, therefore the root powder was sprinkled on the body and clothes and added to potpourri sachets. The intensely flowery essence of Orris is strengthened in Dhen Musk Orris by velvety soothing dark Musk, which makes this fragrance a most scent-sual olfactory treat. WHAT IS ORRIS
The scent of Orris is derived from the roots of Iris flowers (Iris Germania, Iris Florentina and Iris Pallida), and differs in scent from the flower itself. The fragrance is heavy, tenaciously floral, somewhat fruity and woody. It takes ½ ton of dried and aged orris root to produce 1 kg (2lbs) of essential oil ‘orris root butter’, which makes the orris essence very pricey and rare.
WHAT IS ORRIS USED FOR
Orris is highly prized as a fixative and for its violet-like scent note within perfumery, and the dried orris root is a common base for potpourris. As an alternative medicine, orris is used for treating skin diseases, digestive problems, bodily aches, as well as bronchitis and cancer, and topically for teething, burns, cuts, scars and bad breath. In fine Middle Eastern and North African fine cuisine, orris is important as a main ingredient in the spice blend Ras el Hanout, and as tincture for flavor syrups, indistinguishable from raspberry.
